The budget tablet market is growing and Zync has thrown in the gauntlet with its Z1000 tablet that features a 9.7-inch display and a 1.5GHz processor.

When other features of the device are taken into account, the device looks nice on paper, but we are curious if it can give competition to Micromax Funbook Pro, a popular device in this segment. Well, let's check out how good the device is and whether it is really worth Rs 11,000.

Hardware:

Zync Z1000 features an IPS display same as that of Apple iPad's screen size and supports 1024x768p resolution. Under the hood is a 1.5GHz processor with 1GB RAM, along with 8GB internal storage; you can expand storage up to 32GB via microSD card. On the back, this tablet sports a 2MP camera, while a VGA cam is placed in the front.
Connectivity options in the device include 2G and 3G internet access via sim-card, along with Wi-Fi. You can also transfer data via microUSB, miniHDMI and Bluetooth 2.0. The tablet comes with a proprietary charger, which means you cannot recharge its battery by simply connecting it to a laptop/computer, a major disadvantage.

Software:

Z1000 runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) out of the box and can be upgraded to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean).
There are not too many customisations to the OS, but you do get a few preloaded apps like Facebook, music streaming, Big Flix subscription and Ibibo Games, among others.
While trying out the tablet, our experience was severely hampered by persistent lag. It takes a while before you can open the menu from the home screen, or start an app.
The lag is a big letdown and nearly kills the utility of the device when you have several apps running. We really hope that Android's Project Butter optimisations kick in and smoothen things out when the device is upgraded to Jelly Bean.
